1996 – 2009 (13 years)
Peterson Tribology lab conducted research in UHMWPE, XLPE, CoCr and ceramic wear combinatioons with associated debris studies. Also conducted hip and knee simulation studies for much of the worlds orthopedic industry. Scientific publications represented in proceedings ORS/Biomaterials Soc and in journals JBJS JBMR, J. IMechEng (H), JASME and JWear.

an Clarke was originally trained in both mechanical and bioengineering specialties and now offers over 40 years of experience in orthopedic research. Dr. Clarke’s career has spanned academics and industry. In 1996 Dr. Clarke launched the Peterson Tribology Laboratory to investigate the wear performance of biomaterials used in hip and knee joint replacements.
This laboratory runs contract wear studies on hip and knee performance for industry worldwide. In 2009, Dr. Clarke joined forces with Tom Donaldson MD of the DARF Center, located in Colton, California (www.darfcenter.org). Current focus in on the retrieval analysis of metal-on-metal (MOM) hip joints retrieved from orthopedic centers in Asia, Europe and the US. The past 18 months have seen extensive work on 2 FDA contracts A) investigating MOM retrievals and B) running adverse simulator wear models (pre-clinicals) for MOM bearings, plus attendance at ASTM task forces tasked with studying these topics.
Specialties:
Laboratory wear studies of hip
and knee joint replacements
Failure analysis of retrieved hip
and knee joint replacements
